Build: Adapting the new LEGO roads plates for MILS
What's the best way of putting in a nice curb in your LEGO City?
Over the weekend I lay out my LEGO Cityscape with the new LEGO roads system.
When LEGO introduced the new road system which is different to the traditional road plates they were controversial because a lot of fans questioned how well the would work with AFOLs existing built modulars.
For me from the outset I’ve said I’m building my LEGO city streetscape using MILS as a means of interconnecting everything.
One big issue for LEGO builders has been what level to put the road at and the issue of whether, particularly if you build at baseplate, the risk that your road could be higher than your pavement (not a good look).
Youtuber Brick’n’it explains this issue well.
For me given I’m using MILS I have some room to move in terms of lowering the street but I wasn’t sure of the best method for doing it.
Ideally what I wanted was a good chunk of pavement (for minifigure action) and as I wrote last week not all the modulars give you this. Here’s what I came up with (apologies not quite finished yet waiting on some pieces):
The inspiration for this came from Youtuber Bevans Bricks. He has a number of Youtube videos on the topic but it was the video below which really helped me out.
While it isn’t quite identical (mainly cause I’m using standard LEGO bricks for my MILS system) the basic pieces are there just one plate high up.
Key to this approach is the use of the Brick 1 x 2 x 1.33 with Curved Top (6091) brick which helps give you that curved curb and also allows you also put in drains that I think look very realistic.
In my case I ended up getting the 6091 bricks used off Brickowl and unfortunately they are a bit faded (I’ll plan on changing them over time.) See below.
I also still need to map out the best way to do a corner around my bank (shout out if you’ve already done this using the new road) but overall I’m happy with the look and what it achieves.
On the other side of my street I’m playing with the Lego fun fair pack which I really like and it gave me some great #LEGOstagram pics:
